Tom Newman, The Celt Experience Brewery
Tom Newman is the founder of Celt Experience Brewery, a former water industry engineer who has been brewing beers for 10 years since he left his job and decided to start brewing in his father's garage in Banwell, Somerset moving to larger premises in 2003.
In 2007 he secured a commercial mortgage and purchased the unit in Caerphilly, moved in the summer of 2007 and was brewing by the beginning of 2008.
It was in Caerphilly that he really developed the Celt Experience range of beers. The brand is intended to resonate with what it means to be Celtic - and also to supply a range of beers intended to suit different moods and moments. The beers have sold well both in the UK and internationally on the strength of the brand and the flavours.
The brewery produces around 20,000 litres a week. Turnover has gone from £600.000 three years ago to just under £1m last year. It would have been more, but a company that the Celt Experience did contract brewing for went under, leaving them struggling to fill the gap with their own products.
The brewery supplies five supermarket chains in Wales - Tesco, Morrisons, Asda, Waitrose and Sainsbury's and hopes he can expand some of those sales across the border into England. It is also selling into around 20 export markets, including several European countries, Russia, the US, Canada, Australia, China, Japan and Chile, but these markets are described as "in the foothills of growth", and a lot of time is spent travelling to build up the overseas markets.
At the start of 2012 around half the brewery's sales were to the free trade and pubs, with another 30% to retail and 10% export. Now, supermarkets account for around 40% of sales and exports another 35%.
To add to Toms passion and interest to beer at the start of 2012 he became Wales' first accredited beer sommelier and actively promotes the growth of alternative beers. Toms beer food pairings can regularly be seen at venues around Wales
