Financial crises have been a regular feature of the past forty years and the only question now is when is the next one going to erupt? History tells us that this should be within the next 10 years. The presentation will demonstrate why examining history is a much better way to predict financial crises than analysing mathematical models and products. The following specific points will be covered:

• Why mathematical models are never useful for explaining or predicting a financial crisis
• Why financial crises are not really about risk and complex products
• The lessons of history in terms of the specific factors that create a financial crisis
• How and why financial crises neither begin nor end with banks
